The Summit Lake Offers Something for Everyone

Panorama Pointe isn’t hyperbole. Just ask Ruth Johnson. Every time she looks out her windows, she marvels at the beauty surrounding her lakeside home at The Summit. With a panoramic view of the 8.5-acre lake, Johnson takes in the nature around her.

“I enjoy so much just looking out my windows and seeing the beauty, the birds and everything that is going on here,” Ruth said.

Summit Lake is the jewel of the Life Plan Community with residents able to walk an over one-mile trail around or use a paddle boat, canoe or johnboat on it. The Summit is also home to an avid group of birders, identifying over 40 types living around the lake.

Residents regularly spot deer, geese, ducks, a gray heron, a white egret, wild turkeys, rabbits and beavers.

The walking trail — wide enough for a golf cart for easy access — provides a wonderful way to enjoy the wildlife. “I love walking around the entire lake. It’s a really good walk to do each day,” Ruth said.

Jim Pollock finds his way to the pier and casts into the water. The lake is stocked with bass, perch and bluegill – most ranging from nine to 14 inches. The fishermen use artificial lures and jigs on the catch-and-release lake.

“The fish seem to like to bite pretty well,” he said. “I enjoy fishing on the pier, the dock and around the lake.”

The Summit, which sits in Wyndhurst, a beautiful walking community of Lynchburg, feels like the country on the lake. “Even though this is an urban setting, it does feel like you are out in the country fishing on a small farm or lake,” Jim said. “This is an ideal place to fish.”

Jim should know. He’s been casting a line since he was four years old. “It just feels peaceful,” he said. “It’s pretty down here too.”

A gazebo and grill make the lake perfect for picnics and parties. The walking trail — orchestrated by residents — includes several benches along the way to stop and take in the views. “You have to experience it to realize what a treasure it is,” Jim said.

The lake plays a vital role in The Summit’s wellness culture, by offering a scenic spot to exercise, either on or around the lake.

“It’s an incredibly wonderful thing for me to live here on the lake,” Ruth said.
