The Summit Celebrates 12 Years

The Summit Celebrates 12 Years

Tuesday, August 4, 2015

This August, The Summit is celebrating its 12-year anniversary! Residents and staff enjoyed a black-tie-optional dinner party complete with champagne and a plated dinner prepared by Meriwether Godsey, our dining services partner.

The Summit’s Independent Living was the first phase of continuum care to open on August 4, 2003. Five households moved in that day and thus began a legacy of community that continues today. The Summit’s Health and Rehabilitation Center opened in 2006 and Assisted Living in 2007.

The Summit was an idea first talked about in 1986 – some 16 years before construction started. Members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) recognized the need for a senior living option, and a partnership with Centra Health brought the much needed management, skills, and reputation to make the vision of The Summit possible.

Executive Director Ken Burger was involved in the project since it's early days and is so proud of the place it has become:  "From our first days of envisioning this continuing care retirement community, we wanted to build a senior living community that would offer retirees the sense of community and peace of mind to fully engage in the freedom and joys of life. Each day, our residents live that vision in their own ways; they continue to amaze me with the way that life is embraced, with the depth of experience, and with the breadth of caring present in this community."
