Meet Your Neighbor: Charlie Cushwa & Penny Swisher

Wednesday, December 12, 2018

Charlie Cushwa and Penny Swisher knew each other pretty well before they got married. After all, Penny’s son married Charlie’s daughter and they share a grandchild.

When their spouses passed away, “it just kind of worked out,” Penny said. The couple has five children and 10 grandchildren. Charlie moved to The Summit after his wife passed away and Penny followed after the couple married. “The people over here are so warm, friendly and inviting so I thought, ‘I might as well move in,’” she said.

They came into their second marriage with experience. Charlie was married 57 years and Penny 48 years. When the pastor handling pre-marital counseling heard their history, he said, “I don’t think we need to ask any more of these questions,” Charlie said.

Penny stayed home with her children. After four years in the Navy in submarine service, Charlie studied wildlife biology at Virginia Tech, becoming a research biologist for the government in Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Alaska and West Virginia.
