Before moving to The Summit, I lived in South Boston in a house in the woods — I’d had my fill of sticks and leaves and gutters. I took my time getting all my estate affairs in order, but I knew I wanted to come to The Summit. I wanted to move to a continuing care community, which South Boston didn’t have. Earlier, my daughter and son-in-law had driven me around Enterprise Drive, and I had met with The Summit’s marketing officials. Once Ken assured me that my antique china cupboard would fit, I was ready to move when the building was completed. My other daughter and son-in-law moved from their South Boston house to mine, and six months later, I loaded my furniture in the moving van to head to Lynchburg.

I’ve lived here since 2003, and what I do here is what I’ve done all my life. I’ve always been a joiner and a stay-busy person. I don’t go a day without looking at my calendar and corresponding with my family and friends by email. My husband was a Baptist minister, and I stay involved in the church here on the Spiritual Life Committee. I always enjoy meeting the new people and welcoming them to the community. We have a wonderful community here — You want to get to know your neighbors, which I’ve certainly done over my four years on the Residents’ Council. I love to be involved. Before I came to Lynchburg, I volunteered for missions every month, and now I do the same on a local basis. When The Summit Health and Rehabilitation Center opened, we said, “We’ll volunteer — what do you need?” They needed help with bingo on Fridays, so that’s what we do. Whatever the residents need, we help them.

Since I moved here, I’ve kept involved in the things I’ve always done.
