For Kathryn and me, Lynchburg has been home for over 30 years. We raised our family and built a business here. We retired to the beach when our sons were grown, and it didn’t take long for us to move back.

As a founding partner of The Greenwood Partnership, I enjoyed working at 901 Main Street, where our engineers and architects performed projects for some of Lynchburg’s landmarks like Monument Terrace. Kathryn worked at CVCC before taking a position with The Greenwood Partnership, so our careers only fueled our roots here. We moved to Pawleys Island, South Carolina, when we retired in 2001 with a plan to return to Lynchburg after five years. Not that the beach isn’t easy living, but we were tired of having to take care of our house. More than that, we wanted our two sons in Indiana and Richmond to know we have quality healthcare available, should we ever need it. Our friends here told us about The Summit. Since we moved into our garden home, it’s been a huge relief to have a house without the responsibilities of repairs or maintenance that usually go with homeownership.

We’ve always been civic-minded, so we stay involved around town and at The Summit. Both Don and I enjoy volunteering. We’re active in the Lynchburg community, as we’ve always been, but there are also many ways to be involved in The Summit community; I’m on the Residents’ Council, and both Don and I volunteer at The Summit Health and Rehabilitation Center. One benefit here that we never had in town is that we can walk everywhere in Wyndhurst. If you visit a friend or go to the Jamerson Family YMCA, you don’t have to get in the car and drive. You can just enjoy the walk.

We may be retired, but we live just as we always have, just without the hassles.
